It's easier to look at what those around us have or are accomplishing and want to compete with them. We let our insecurities take over in he battle to be the best, have the most, etc. In doing so, we miss out on personal growth & development.

Fact: Unhealthy competition & comparison leads to more stress. Unhealthy stress becomes toxic - you become toxic and you will create a toxic environment wherever you go. So, here are 4 ways to avoid being a toxic human all together and put the focus on becoming a more mindful and confidently developed person....which will guarantee you the wins in life you want. Winners focus just as much as being in the right headspace as they do any other of the elements of whatever competition you are in (dance, pageants, cheer, a promotion for work, college acceptance, etc.)

1. REFLECT

When someone else wins, does that mean that we lost? Kinda, but only if you don't take the time to reflect and grow. You might feel a sense of defeat, jealousy, anger, sadness....all the feels at once. Its normal and its ok. But, what we do with those feelings and how we channel time matter most for OUR OWN WELL BEING (and frankly - your reputation). So, next time someone else wins, targeting you to feel like you lost, try focusing on why you feel the way you feel instead of focusing on the loss itself. Ask yourself:

-do I admire the person that "won"?

-do they often succeed?

-what are they doing differently than I am?

Often, the people that do succeed are people we admire and respect. Often, people who succeed continue to succeed. And often it's because they are doing something different. Spend time doing critical thinking and reflecting not on WHAT they are doing right and you are doing wrong, but instead on what YOU can be doing to become someone that people admire, that succeeds continually...and often the answer is in changing up whatever it is your are currently doing. For example, in pageants: maybe you always have the best dress and walk, you can talk in an interview, but you are missing the sparkle and excitement keeping you from the crown (Kristen Dalton Wolfe wrote a whole book about this called The Sparkle Effect), so ask yourself why am I not sparkling on stage, what factors am I missing, how does one sparkle, what does sparkling look like to a pageant judge, and grow from there.

2. DON'T PLAY THE BLAME GAME

When someone else succeeds and we don't, especially in any competition - we like to play the blame game. We desperately grasp for closure. And 99.9% of the time the blame is an incorrect assumption, something factless or based on something small and baseless that we heard or saw and then our minds turned it into something more to protect our hearts. In pageants, I see this a lot (ie: "the Judes wanted a blonde this year and you were brunette, you have to have a coach to win, I heard on the elevator that the girl that won knew so and so") These are almost always incorrect and are simply you or whoever projecting your/their own insecurities out into the world. This is extremely harmful. Not only does it lead to gossip and rumors, but it in no way helps you to grow. I know this first hand because I, myself, have participated in the blame game when I didn't win pageants. My last year competing in Miss Teen USA, I didn't win and I walked away blaming the pageant and that "they wanted someone who didn't know what they were doing." In my opinion (and of course in my mom and support team opinions), I was a pageant pro and the girl that won had a terrible wardrobe and had no idea what was happening. For that pageant, 7 different people (the judges) cast their own, individual votes and their own individual opinions landed the results to be that a different girl was more suited for the role of Miss NE Teen USA than I was.... FOR A REASON. What I see now, many years later is that she was fresh and excited to be there. And if that nasty blame game attitude was my attitude when I didn't win, imagine how disingenuous and rehearsed I must have looked competing. Of course I didn't win! But, because I played the blame game, I gave up. I didn't return to compete again and I gave up on a childhood dream. It's the biggest regret I have and I always wonder, "what if I had competed again?" More importantly, it set my personal growth backwards and I lost more than the crown.

3. WRITE DOWN YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Gosh, is it easy to forget about our own accomplishments. And, I don't just mean how many trophies and accolades you have swept up. The biggest accomplishments are just within the fact that you tried in the first place. Stepping outside your comfort zone, challenging yourself, setting a goal are all accomplishments. Even acknowledging that fact that you want to try again is an ACCOMPLISHMENT! By creating the list you are not only able to remind yourself that you have accomplished more than you realize, but will also awaken you to new opportunities for new goals.

4. COLLABORATE

I am not saying to NOT acknowledge there is a competition. You SHOULD acknowledge it, but in a healthy way. Healthy Competition is actually great for growth. It motivates and inspires us. I like to call this collaboration. So, go back to step 1 and reflect on what it is that strikes you about that person that did get the win or the person that in your eyes is killing it in life, pageants, or whatever field it is and reach out to them. Compliment them and to ask them for advice and resources that helped them develop the qualities that you admire most about them. I promise, they will be willing to share. This will not only provide you resources your didnt have before, but will help you to grow friendships and your network.

5. SET YOUR GOALS

Having spent time reflecting on why you compared yourself to others in the first place, reminding yourself of your own accomplishments, and motivating yourself by collaborating with those you respect, now it's time to set some real goals. Whatever those goals are, make the first one on your list: "becoming someone who collaborates and doesn't compare" because this is the first step to become a more healthy, mindful, and successful person.

Breanne Ewinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08814216882660095314noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1774209826998338184.post-41070266455769401102020-10-25T20:43:00.004-04:002020-10-25T20:43:57.242-04:00EXTRA, EXTRA! If its any inkling of what your bedroom looks like, it's probably a messy situation. LOL
So, what do you REALLY need in there (aside from your crown/banner). Make sure the next time you leave the house for your appearance, your crown box contains these 5 things.

*PS - if you are a FIRST time pageant girl, you might be wondering what is a "Crown Box?" ANSWER: A crown box is like a small piece of luggage that a pageant titleholder carries her crown and banner in for safe storage, usually brining it with her to appearances.

1. Sharpie & Autograph Cards (or business cards)
Yo'll probably get asked for your autograph or have the opportunity to pass these out at an appearance, so be ready.
2. Mints
You always want to smell minty fresh when speaking with people. But, avoid gum so you aren't chopping on it during speaking engagements and stick to mints instead.
3. Blister Band-Aids
Most appearances require some type of physical activity...like walking in a parade, touring through your states capital with a political official, modeling...and that means you are on your feet. Shoes can cause blister, so be prepared with blister band-aids so you can KEEP UP!
4. Compact Mirror
You want to make sure that you look presentable and your crown is on straight. After all, you are a representative. Look the part.
5. Travel Size Tissue
Sure, it gets the boogies out. But, this can be helpful for a number of things. Possibly, during your appearances - you gave or you witnessed a moving speech or testimonial the bought you to tears. Possibly, you spilled on yourself during the dinner gala. Possibly, your hands got messy from doing manual labor on a service project. Tissues can be a quick fix.

Lastly, looking for a DREAM crown BOX to keep all this in, you can find the BEST crown boxes in 2 locations:
1. At your NAM Pageant Boutique
Did you know that I graduated Cum Laude from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchanding in Los Angeles, CA? In fact, I graduated with LC from that TV show your older siblings or parents used to watch called "The Hills" (back in the early 2000, she was super popular). But, I wanted to put my fashion degree to good use and actually forecast some trends. Ironically, I started seeing these trends at #NAMnationals19 this past November. But, I always use NAM nationals as a gauge of trend setting for the upcoming year, because NAM nationals is really a WHOSE WHO of pageantry - the top competitors are competing, top pageant winners like Miss USAs are judging, top fashion designers like AshleyLauren are on location with a pop up boutique. It's literally like fashion week for pageantry.

So, if you wanna stay trendy for your next pageant.....check out this video AND for additional photos of examples of these top trends, check out my previous blog of trends I saw at Nationals HERE!

But, I also love it because it's where you see the TOP TRENDS. Everyone is rolling out their best looks - hair, makeup, business attire, gowns, runway...you name it. If it's hot - it's at #NAMnationals.

But, there were some trends that I saw that I think we can expect to see a lot more of rolling into 2020 and are totally worth mentioning. Check them out...

TREND #1: LESS IS MORE
Something that I saw a lot of (especially in the optional Runway Contest) was really simple, clean looks that were elevated with a bold shape or unique print. In the past for Runway, it seemed like girls would take formal wear dresses and cut them apart to make into what looked like shorts with a cape over it and there was lots of bling, print, color, texture - just a lot going on. But, these 5 looks not only scored high during runway, but I think the reason they did score well was because the girls took the less is more approach, thus letting their stage presence and modeling skills command the stage instead of their outfits.

This basic black has Hailey Sturgill looking trendy and sophisticated all at once. Also, a high neck line helps to bring focus to her face and elongated her body. The pop on the skirt added a little bit of flare, but was simple and not overpowering. No wonder she was in Runway Top 5 for our Miss division.

Mariah Turner is full of attitude and having a more simplified outfit paired well with her natural fierceness, winning her the National Runway title for the Jr. Pre-Teen age group. I thought the colors were youthful and I liked how the draping was off her sleeves and not necessarily a cape, like we see a thousand times. I love that she wore her hair natural and the pop of pink in her ears was fun.

I am obsessed with everything about this outfit. The shape, the cut-outs, the colors. The only thing I may have changed if it were me wearing it were the earrings (I would have worn black, but thats just me). But, pairing the black leggings with black boots kept the outfit from breaking up into pieces and once again, that high neckline elongated her look and she was clever to pull her hair back and off her face.

We've seen the high/low a thousand times before, but I thought Miss South Texas Jr. Pre-Teen really made it look elegant and youthful. I think what set this high/low a part was the material. It looked elegant, but fashion forward and because it was a heavier material, it took a shape on the runway instead of just being flowy. Also, I loved that the dress was simple, but the color popped on stage and the whole look was super age appropriate.

I thought Miss Oklahoma Teen, Hosanna Hales, really gave us a unique look in this ensemble. Pairing a classic black dress with a flowy white vest, was a unique spin on a very classic look. I think I would have gone with dramatic ear cuffs if it were me, but other than that - I love the simplicity, elegance, and shape.

TREND #2: MINIMAL SEQUINS
First, lets' be clear - it's a pageant. So, there was plenty of sequins and sparkle. But, a lot less than usual. Fabrics seemed to dominate with lots of texture. Where there was rhinestones on a gown, it was minimal. I think it was refreshing to see and many of the girls that kept it fresh scored well. In fact, most of our National Queens who took home the crowns really kept it light on the bling, but heavy on the textures in their gowns. Check out what I mean.
This precious one shoulder dress was simple and clean on our new National Jr. Pre-Teen, Ava Gresser. The one shoulder bow kept it youthful and elegant. She did add a bit of bling at the neckline and on the trim of the bow, but it was minimal and her earrings were simple dangles. All eyes were on Ava, and not on her dress.

Olivia Wynkoop, our new All-American Teen sported a really timeless dress. Variations of this style have been seen in the 80's, 90's, and through today. The base of her dress was a simple white lace and the cape skirt added a bit of flair that looked angelic and soft as she took the runway. I love that she chose an off the shoulder dress. Olivia is tall and so this really complemented her height.

This little nugget stole the show during the Top 5 Question, professing her interest in #thatguy (AKA - Loren, one of our Official NAM entertainers). But, before she opened her mouth, she was already gliding across the stage in this lavender gown which features a simple textured pattern on the whole dress and minimal stoning at the waist. It was soft and elegant, which made her witty attitude all that much more of surprise! Well done, Brielle Skye!

Caitlyn Kramer's Johnathan Kayne dress is a black crushed velvet, strapless dress. It was elegant and simple, but the multi-tier ruffles created a super trendy vibe. I love that with Caitlyn's dark skin - she took a chance on wearing a dark dress because it totally payed off and she captured the title of All-American Miss.

TREND #3: CURLS FOR THE GIRLS
Back in my pageant day, everyone was chemically straightening their hair and a chi flat iron was in every pageant girls tool kit ...and by everyone I do mean yours truly! HELLO! Now, this really isn't just a NAM trend I am seeing, but it's becoming a pageant trend. (Hello Miss USA) Girls are rocking their natural locks, and even doing so for ALL hair textures..... and I am totally here for it. These were some of my FAVES (also, I too have naturally curly hair that I haven't worn natural since college....and I wish my natural curls were as pretty as these girls'!)
Our New National Teen, Faith Pierre-Charles, has been competing in NAM for a few years and I have never seen her rock her natural curls. In fact, I didn't even recognize her for the first few days. But, Faith came to NAM this year being authentically herself, from her hairstyle to her attitude...it paid off.

Briyah Love Nobles is the epitome of "authentic and natural." Hosanna Hales, Miss Oklahoma Teen, has naturally curly hair, and she always wear it back (I don't think I have ever seen it down since she started as a Jr. Teen with us a few years ago), which I think is a unique and rare look. It is uncommon to see girls with natural curls pull their hair up and off their face, but this look has become her signature and I think it's worth highlighting for that reason alone!

Miss Iowa Teen, Olivia went bold with the fro. I remember her wearing her hair like this at state during preliminary Formal Wear competition and when she walked out - the whole audience gasped (seriously). I think time stood still as she took the stage - she was a beacon of beauty and it was such a fresh look! I am so happy she rocked the same look at Nationals, snagging a Top 12 finish, Runway winner, and Destination Model winner!

TREND #4: BOSS BABES IN PANTS
Yo, the pants and jumpsuits were here for the party! Interview & Personal Intro competitions saw girls of ALL ages dominate their communication skills while wearing these. I think there is something about pants that makes a girl feel like "I can do anything a man can do" and I'm loving that jumpsuits are becoming power suits. How precious is Miss Oregon? I'm loving the bow detail at the waist and the coordinating bow detail on the shoe. The ruffled sleeve paired with the bow detailing and soft color kept this fashion trend looking little girl pageant perfect.

Terri Lynn, Miss Tennesse Jr. Pre-Teen, really went bold with this fabric and print. The whole plaid/houndstooth fabric/print can come off really heavy and non figure flattering if you don't do it right, but she did. Adding the simple belt accented the look and kicked it up a notch to be even more on trend. The look is youthful, classy, and totally fashion forward. Well done!

Miss Wisconsin Princess, Avrianna Artus, slayed in this adorable 2 piece pant suit. It was a fresh, new look on the old 2 piece interview suit classic. The bow in her hair helped to keep it age appropriate. It's no wonder this look made its way into the Top 12 at Nationals!

TREND #5: #GIRLINTHEGREENDRESS
When Miss Jamaica was announced as the winner of Miss World, her runner-ups were more ecstatic than she was...especially Miss Nigeria!!!! If you haven't seen the video, I posted it below and just watch #girlinthegreendress to see what I'm talking about. But, while I swear, I'm not just trying to bring the focus back home on really whats important at NAM...sisterhood and besties! But, this was a year that I saw SERIOUS support and LOVE for one another amongst the girls...on a whole new level. Is this a pageant thing? A generational thing? I'm not sure. But, I want to truly commend each of you girls AND your parents who were at #NAMnationals19 for having the same spirit as #girlinthegreendress and for making COMPASSION, LOVE, SUPPORT, SISTERHOOD...all the goodness ....ON TREND!
Well, that's a wrap on reviewing the hottest trends we saw this Thanksgiving. Will we see you be a trendsetter at next year's #NAMnationals. I sure hope so!
What are the judges looking for? What wins?"

I can't tell you how many times I have been asked this. And, I get it. It's not a contest that is on stage, so people can't see all the entries. Of course, it raises question and people want to enter photos that will win! While this contest is easy to participate in, it's also SURPRISINGLY one of the EASIEST to do well in! So, I thought I would highlight what those judges look for and some tips to accomplish it.

But, before I share that with you, I want to point out a couple of things about the photogenic contest that you may not really be aware of, but can lead to winning additional trophies & prizes:

1. Just by entering 1 photo, you will receive a Photogenic Ribbon
2. Enter 4 photos and you receive the Portfolio Trophy (Why? Because in the modeling industry - if you were going to "go sees" or auditions, you would be asked to bring your "portfolio." Your portfolio consists of about 4 of your best photos, so by submitting 4 photos - you have a portfolio.) However, each photo is judged separate, thus you are giving yourself 4 chances to win!
3. Each photogenic photo that you submit also earns you 1 point towards the Spirit of America trophy, which will be presented to you ON STAGE! For more details on Spirit of America CLICK HERE
4. By entering both the Optional Photogenic AND Casual Wear Modeling Contests, you will automatically be entering yourself into the Most Promising Model Contest. The winner receives a trophy, recognized on stage, and a Golden Ticket to the National Pageant in California!
5. Remember, Photogenic is Optional and has no bearing on who becomes the next State Queen.

OK OK OK.....So back to what the judges are looking for! Really....it comes down to a criteria of 5 things to accomplish a solid photogenic score:

1. Follow the Rules.
If your photo breaks the rules, you aren't going to have a very good chance of winning this contest. For all the rules on this contest, CLICK HERE

2. Age Appropriate.
This is one of the key RULES, but I can't stress this enough. I can't tell you how many photos get turned in that are not age appropriate. An example is a 7 year old turning in a photo with a FACE FULL OF MAKEUP (note* - you can wear makeup in your photos for ALL age groups, but it needs to be kept age appropriate) or a TEEN contestant turning in a photo that has her wearing a tiny bikini and standing in a scandalous position. If grandpa has a difficult time looking at the photo, so will our judges.

3. Quality
The Quality of the photo is important First, the actual photo. Avoid photos that are grainy, pixelated, or low resolution. This prevents the judges from seeing YOU. A nice, clear, crisp photo will do much better. Pay attention to lighting. YOu can take a well lit photo with your i-phone these days (tip - stand FACING the sun or light. The person taking the photo should stand with their back against it). Avoid putting filters on your photo. While they are cute for social media - this would not get you a professional modeling job. Also, you are required to submit a physical photo - print this out on photo paper and avoid printing this out at home on regular paper. If you were a professional model and went to a casting call for Fashion Week, would you submit a photo on printer paper? So, don't do it at NAM either.

4. Posing
Turn in a photo with a flattering pose. The judges are going to ask themselves...is this somebody I would see on the cover of a magazine or a brochure? Make sure that we can clearly see you and that you are the only one in the photo. Avoid submitting photos with your family, friends, and pets. They did not enter the photogenic contest - YOU have.

5. Style
Any style of photo works. ANY! Professional works. A great photo that your dad takes in the backyard works. (I was 1st runner up at NATIONALS with a photo my Dad took on our porch!) A great selfie works. Full body shots work. Outdoor works. School Photo Works. Senior Photo Works. Headshots work. Color works. Black and white works. Do not focus on the style so much...because they all work (as long as they are keeping in with the rules).

You DO NOT have to have a professionally taken photo to win this contest. But, if you are looking to get some professional photos that you can also use for this contest, our National Photoshoot Sponsor is Brittany Link Photography. Our National Queens get flown to Houston every year for their official photoshoot with the top hair and makeup artists, wardrobe, etc...and Brittany takes behind the camera! She's also a NAM alumni and an award winning photographer who knows all about the NAM photogenic contest!

Can't wait to see what photos you turn in at this year's State Pageant!
Of course, like any influencer - she vlogged her whole experience! But, this amazing NAM State Finalist has quite the following for viewers in sharing her beauty and makeup tips! Like, Im talking - hello James Charles! She's so talented that I had to share with the NAMily! So, today I wanted to feature Bella and 2 awesome videos that might be helpful for all NAM girls, both new and returning.

Today I thought we would take a stroll down the evolution of....THE HAIR! And I gotta tell ya, this blog was my fave! It's funny how iconic hairstyles are. Think about it, even though FRIENDS has not been on the air for over 20 years, "THE RACHEL" is still something I think every generation can understand the reference and appreciate it!
2003 - 2005
In the early days, the style was VAST depending on your age. The curlier the better for the little girls, with matching bows or fancy up-dos!
While older girls kept it super simple and almost BONE straight. It seemed like once your turned 13, you were automatically gifted a hair straightener and it was the one item you could not live without! (I clearly did not get the message, as I kept curling my hair. Yep, that's me in the middle!)
I like to call this the year of the "side sweep." Girls were sweeping one side of their hair behind one ear and pinning it back with poppy pins. They usually complemented it with soft, big curls. But, straight hair was also just as common. I think girls dug it because it was elegant, but worked well with EVERY age division and seemed relatively easy to do.

Then came "the wand" I was first introduced to the wand by Sarah Rose Summers, who is the current Miss USA. But, a then 15 year old Sarah showed me how she kept super tight curls throughout her hair ALL day long. It was a curling iron that had tapered at the bottom and had no clamp. You would wrap your hair around it and then hold it. I can't tell you how many times girls burned their fingers doing this!

After the hype of the wand, girls were settling for soft, loose curls and the center part became "a thing." Ironically - girls were still using the wand to create the curls and then brushing it out. But, a new technique came about. Stylists were figuring out how to curl hair with a a straighter. Yep, they started at the top of the crown, clamped down on a patch of hair, and wrapped the hair around it - just like they had with the wand. Then they slowly releases and pulled the straighter down. Combing the hair out with a soft bristled brush and voila!

"The Swoop" had always been a pageant staple...since the 80's. Some variation of it will probably never go out of the style in pageantry, but it was REALLY prominent over the span of these 2 years. I can't tell you the number of girls that I saw in rehearsals with giant rollers in their hair to give extra body and curl.... and then a clip holding their swoop up right until the moment they went on stage. If you aren't sure what "The Swoop" is, its when your hair is parted to one side and the swoop is the side where your hair swoops UP and away from your face. It is ALMOST always met with loose curls of some sort and it seemed like EVERY division was rocking it!

AU NATURALE seems to have been the theme over the past 2 years, with it really being prominent in 2018. I can't tell you the number of girls that were putting down the hair tools and chemicals and going with what God gave them...whatever that is! And, this wasn't just on the NAM stage, but almost every stage. This past year, I went to the Miss Universe Pageant in Bangkok and the women that were taking the international stage were rocking the most natural hair styles. Now listen - let's be clear - they weren't just waking up in the morning and getting on stage with bed head, but you get what Im saying! It seems that there is no such thing any longer as a "pageant do." Anything and everything is acceptable. Pageants were created so young women could feel good about who they are and what they want to accomplish...and having a hairstyle that makes you feel that way is just the cherry on the cake!

I am certain that 2019 will build off the all natural hairstyles we've seen over the past few years. The hair industry is always changing, beauty video tutorials have millions of viewers, and girls are feeling more liberated in their beauty choices than ever before. I'm just waiting for a girl to win wearing a scruncci...then I know life will come full circle!
But, today I wanted to feature some fun throwbacks and showcase our Production Number Outfits.

State Production Number T-shirt:
The very first year of NAM, we had a Red t-shirt and since then girls have worn light blue, Kelly green, purple and a million different shades of pink!

A lot of people ask me how we decide what colors or graphics go on the shirt each year.

Color:
True Story: We have actually googled what the most popular color is for that year! We haven't done this EVERY year, but this has definitely occurred!! LOL! Also, we try to think of colors that will pop on stage and that might be the type of t-shirt that a girl DOES not already have in her closet.

Graphic:
Sate Directors used to vote from a selection of graphics put together by the NAM National Office's graphic arts department. But, for the past few years - we have let the GIRLS decide...after all, its YOU GIRLS who wear the shirt (even though - I totally snag one myself each year!) So, at each National Pageant in California over Thanksgiving - the girls attending the National Pageant get to vote from 4 choices of graphics. The winner is what is printed on the shirt the following year at State Pageants! In the photos below, the purple shirt and the pink shirt with the "LOVE NAM" graphic are what NAM girls selected as their favorite design!
National Production Number Outfit:
Our National's Production Number Outfit has evolved the most over the years. In the first few 12 years, the outfit consisted of a 2 piece black lycra ensemble. The bottoms were always black pants, sometimes with beading up one pant leg. But, the top changed from year to year. Sometimes, older girls saw a one shoulder, other years - it was a halter. I remember one year it being a long sleeve top with shoulder cut outs and bling on the top. The younger girls had a a top that changed colors each year, but always tied in black. A few yeas ago, popular pageant designers wanted to start partnering with NAM and since then we have seen Mon Cheri, Sherri Hill, and AshleyLauren as Official Production Number Outfit Sponsors, dressing our girls in adorable cocktail dresses, each year with a different style.

Fun Fact: we still pay tribute to the original "black dance outfit," and we always ask that the designer still tie in that classic color to their design.
Now, that NAM is an official teenager (and she's quite a fashionable one at that), I thought it would be fun to look back over the past 17 years...of NAM fashion! From Formal Wear Gowns to Opening Number Outfits, it's been a wild ride watching not only the lives of young women transform through their involvement in this program, but also the fashions! For now, lets focus on my favorite competition...Formal Wear! And let's see just how much the Fashions have changed over the past 17 years!

2003-2006
In the early years, looking back it seemed that there weren't a lot of dress options out there. Dresses were simpler, colors more bland (lots of black, white, light pink), fabric was a little less bold compared to the options that exist now, and shapes were kept minimal.

2006
Finally, as pageants grew, so did designers and we started to see MacDuggal, Sherri Hill, Tony Bowls, and Jovani dominate pageant stages. As competition amongst designers has grown, designers have had to find ways to diversify themselves and create bold and different gowns...because nobody wants to look the girl next to them. Finally, we began to see dresses take shape. However, we still saw designers struggle to play with color. Pinks, blues, and whites seemed to be the only colors that were seen on not just the NAM stage, but pageant stages across the globe.

2009
Around 2009, we saw chiffon take over and it seemed like everyone was wearing that fabric for their gown, which was playful and elegant, but limiting in what designers could do with dresses.

2011
Then came the year of the pink in 2011. Different shades from red to light pink...it didn't matter, it seemed that pink was the monochromatic color of the year!

2012
But, then in 2012 - it was all about the blues and greens. Different shades and styles, but it dominated non the less.

2013
In 2013, we saw designer Sherri Hill start to explore with cut outs and printed/dyed fabric, which was really exciting and a step forward in the gown evolution.

2016
In 2016, Princess, Jr. Pre-Teen & Pre-Teen style dresses really started to escalate. Designers finally cut loose and everyone rejoiced! LOL! Skirts had texture (ruffles, feathers, rosettes) and no longer were dresses one solid color, but we saw prints and fabrics on the younger girls that we had never really seen before. Finally, designers gave the little girls the breath of fresh air they had wanted and ability to really express their personality, which NAM loves!
2017

In 2017, older girl dresses took on a world of their own, as focus became put on the structure and architecture of the dress. We saw dresses truly start to "take shape" and the skirted cape or peplum became all the rage...and has continued still to today. Ironically, this style is truly a throwback to the 90's when this style was see on the Miss USA & Miss America stage. I guess we can say design always comes back around.

2018
This past year (2018), was the year of the cap sleeve. Everywhere we turned, it seemed that girls were wearing a sleeve of some type, specifically the "cap sleeve." Aside from this trend, we also saw BOLD colors - greens and neon yellows, florescent pinks and it was glorious!

Also, this was the first year at NAM that rules for Formal Wear changed! Older girls could wear 2- piece dresses and trains were welcomed for all age divisions. As style changes, so do our rules so that we can accommodate both the individual style of our contestants and what is available from designers.

Upon further inspection, I realized the jacket was from one of my FAVE online boutiques, Madida. Not only does Madida carry trendy outfits, but its all pageant girl ran. The owner is a NAM alumni, as well (Madison Novak) and the other babes that help her run it are some of my other fave pageant girls. Next thing I knew, Madison and the girls at Madida were asking me about my favorite things (fave tv show, things i like, my hobbies). Fast forward to yesterday and I received a box at my door with this super THIS adorable personalized "Breanne Jacket"

I had to post the video here of my unboxing so you can get the full effect of how AMAZING this personalized jacket is, you can also view it on my insta stories HERE.

Anyways, I don't think this amazing concept needs any more praise from me...head to Madida and contact them about getting your personalized Denim Jacket. You can purchase a denim jacket from them to deck out OR you can send them one you already have...which what a great way to epicycle your wardrobe!! How adorable will you be wearing this with YOUR TITLE on the back of it!!! Get on it, girl!
New places. New adventures. New sisters to welcome into our NAMily! Sometimes, I think...I should moonlight as a travel blogger with as much as I travel. But, the truth is...it's not very glamorous. Most of my hotel stays are at Holiday Inn Expresses (free continental breakfast...HELLO!) and while I wish I was cruising around on private jets, it's usually Delta Economy...middle row. #yikes
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">While my travel's might not be the most posh, it's important to me that my skin looks like it is.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Like many of you - I get so overwhelmed. The market is saturated with creams, anti this and thats, and devices that you roll, rub, or prick your face with. And enough with the spewing of ingredients...as if Im supposed to know what in the heck their talking about. Are you kidding - I barely passed High School chemistry!? And the prices....#enoughsaid
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Recently RDKL Skin Care sent me this beautifully packaged Skin Care box with 5 easy products inside to try...and I LOVE it.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">My first concern was that it wouldn't be good for my skin type (Dry). However, a quick visit to their site addressed all that and my concerns disappeared. To check out how to use RDKL Skin Care for your skin type: CLICK HERE
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">After one use - my skin felt CLEAN and Dewey....and it smells good. Shout out to whoever at RDKL created the jojobbeads to be big enough to scrub, but soft enough to not chafe my drive skin!
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">However, what I REALLY appreciated was what I considered the "ingredients dictionary for dummies." On their site, they don't just list out the ingredients like they do on the back of bottle, but they literally spell out what the ingredient is and why it's good for your skin. To find out what's inside: CLICK HERE!
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">And, lastly - while this was a gift from the company, it's definitely something I'll buy once this set empties because it's in my price point ($99 for 5 products....heck yes!) SHOP HERE
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Oh...and did I mention, all of their products are under 2 oz, so it's perfect for a carry on for the airplane. Or to fit in your crown box ;)
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Can't wait to hear about your RDKL experience!Breanne Ewinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08814216882660095314noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1774209826998338184.post-84400373124239156652018-04-02T18:12:00.000-04:002018-04-02T18:12:03.476-04:00Lennon Bradley shares with us how she raised her Sponsor Fees (and in style)

1. FKS (fork, knife, spoon) - how to properly set a basic dinner table
2. Always say thank you with a handwritten note

As a girl whose family is rooted in the south, proper etiquette were all part of the things my mom TRIED to instill me. However, anyone who knows me, knows I'm a bit of wild soul. A march to the beat of my own drum kind of gal. Thankfully, my mom just went with it. She let me express my artistic ability and encouraged me to set dinner tables in funny positions, allowed me to drop a naughty word at the dinner table because it generated a laugh, and gave up on her attempt to teach me how to fold napkins beautifully because I was too busy with after school activities to fold a dumb napkin. Now, that I'm older I savor at the idea of hosting dinner parties and providing my quests with pintrest worthy table-scapes and proper manners. Funny how that happens.

However, the ONE thing I never strayed from is hand written Thank You notes. Not a text. Not an email. I mean pen to paper with a pretty postage stamp sent directly to your mail.

One of my favorite competitions at NAM is the Thank You note competition. I think the concept of hand writing something defeats all digital stereotypes and there is something almost nostalgic about it. But, in my opinion it is the kindest and most thoughtful way to truly say Thank You. I love seeing girl's creativity and kind words be put on paper and thank those that supported them in achieving their goals. It's the most genuine competition, in my opinion.

I wanted to share with you some of my favorite places to snag adorable Thank You cards, so you can be sure to put pen to paper in the most thoughtful way!

My MOST favorite: Ellie Illustrations
Ellie is a pageant girl (she's a former Miss Nebraska USA and her little sister is a NAM girl, as well). Her work is a DREAM for girls who love sending Thank You Notes. Her custom sketches really allows each girl to put her customized touch on any note. I'm literally obsessed with the custom NAM thank you notes she's created. How adorbs is this?

And, if you really want to add a special touch - here are some adorable customized gifts, as well. Ellie Illustrations is a National Sponsor for NAM and we are so lucky that she is able to partner with us to help our NAM girls say Thank You with style!
Next Up: Minted
