National American Miss girl touches hearts and lives

Recently, I heard about a NAM girl who was reaching out in a big way. I mean a BIG BIG WAY, so much so - her story was published in the PATRIOT NEWS PAPER, central Pennsylvania's largest paper. She has never captured the crown, but she truly has captured our hearts. This story touching story provides inspiration and recognizes everything that National American Miss stands for - we are pageantry with purpose!

Here is a brief expert from the article, titled  'A bright spot amid a dark concern'  "A Susquehanna Twp. teen is reaching out to the bereaved children of law enforcement officers who die while serving."

Katye Drexler, PennLive, Miss Pennsylvania, Susquehanna Twp., Build-A-Bear, Food Drive National American Miss, Fallen Police Officers, Killed in the line of duty

"Angela Miller said Saturday that 15-year-old Katye Trexler has given her and her three daughters a gift that is beyond compare -- an abiding compassion.

Six months ago, Miller's husband, state Trooper Joshua Miller, 34, of Pittston, was shot and killed by a kidnapping suspect who police said had abducted his own son at gunpoint.

Katye, of Susquehanna Twp., a Trinity High School freshman, stepped in to help the Millers' three daughters, ages 2 to 16.

She made them stuffed animals at the Build-A-Bear Workshop as care packages of condolence and hope.

"It's amazing what Katye is doing," Angela Miller said. "She's the most unselfish child I've ever met."

Miller was among the relatives of two police officers killed in the line of duty who were on hand at an event Saturday to promote Katye's nonprofit group, Katye's Helping Hands.

Katye, whose stepfather is Paul Sheaffer, police chief in Perry County's Penn Twp., said she held the event at the Giant on Linglestown Road to attract financial help from businesses and the public.

Pinned beside a sash denoting her status as a state finalist for National American Miss Junior Teen, Katye wore a button with the image of one of the officers.

Katye sends the personalized stuffed animals to every child of a fallen officer who is 15 or younger. Older children receive fleece blankets bearing police badges that she also makes."
